The lighthouse of Syros is located just opposite the port of Ermoupolis, on the small island “Didimi”. A historical monument that remains for years locked and abandoned by the State and the competent bodies, ready for the fatality, since with an earthquake or with some strong weather phenomena it can collapse. There are many voices and initiatives of people from our island who are calling for immediate measures to save it.
One of them is Captain Sideris Mamidis, who gives his own “battle” for the rescue of the Lighthouse, through exhibitions, photographs and actions that he organizes. In his latest exhibition, recently completed and entitled “SAVE THE LIGHTHOUSE”, the visitor had the opportunity to see rich photographic material of the building and to hear from the host’s words, detailed narratives of the stories that each object of the exhibition carries.
The aim of the exhibition was to mobilise the local authorities and all those who can and should act immediately. It is worth noting that on Sunday 21/8/22 – World Lighthouse Day, our lighthouse was closed, unlike 28 other lighthouses in Greece that had free entrance. On the occasion of this annual global celebration, Captain Sideris, together with a well-known dance association of the island, and the Radio Amateur Radio Club of Cyclades, who had simultaneous communication with all the other lighthouses of the country, organized a trip to “Didymi” with an open invitation for anyone who wanted to participate in this original event. Also, a voluntary crossing by kayak and swimming was carried out by Captain Sideris and Doctor Angelos Koutras, respectively.
Let’s hope that some year, in the near future, our lighthouse (SZ8G) will be visited and included in the lighthouses of the country that will celebrate the World Lighthouse Day!
