Syros: Merchant Shipping in the post-war era through the exhibition of George M. Foustanos

Recently, we visited the exhibition “Merchant Shipping in the post-war era” by George M. Foustanos, founder of “Greek Shipping Miracle”, the first online museum on shipping.

Through the rare and hard-to-find material exhibited at the G. & E. Vati Art Gallery, every resident of Syros, as well as every visitor to the island, can understand the catalytic contribution of merchant shipping and its people in the creation and maintenance of Ermoupolis. The initiator of the exhibition has managed to collect data, information and photographic material from periods of turbulent times, such as the Second World War, including shipwrecks, ship sinkings and executions of sailors by the Germans, enlightening publications and entries in the Syros register, in order to arrive at the development and evolution of Neorio by worthy and visionary shipowners.

This year’s exhibition of the tireless resident of Syros, researcher and writer, who is another valuable contribution of knowledge about Greek shipping and overflows with his love for the sea and the seafaring profession, will be open to the public until August 2. It would be desirable that it remains open for the island’s schools during the winter period, so that younger generations of Syrians can learn about and continue the maritime history of their country.
